Silver lettering, bordered in light green, with the anchor and sea horses decoration to the front. Spine lettering also silver. The colors and silver lettering are still very bright on the cover. The bottom and fore edges are uncut. Corners a bit bumped. This one is signed and inscribed on the front endpaper by Slocum, "Yours very truly Joshua Slocum on the Spray, Cottage City Aug. 5 1906." This is how he customarily signed, giving tours of his boat in the cities he visited. Very scarce signed! The dates on the copyright page are 1899 and 1900, the date on the title page is 1905. . Offsetting from a newspaper article that is attached to the front pastedown has darkened the front endpaper, where the signature and inscription are. The article is from 1910 and details his disappearance in 1908. Slocum of Fairhaven MA and Nova Scotia was the first man to circumnavigate the globe solo. This epic story has been characterized as one of the 25 best adventure stories of all time by Outside magazine.
